Selecting a topic - When?
Most of us have witnessed students frantically searching for project topics almost near the last date of selecting the topic. Due to repetitions and overlaps, some of the topics get rejected and are asked for a revision. The most depressing fact is that someone already would have fixed the topic you have cast your eyes on. This emphasizes the importance of timely planning in selecting a project topic or selecting a laboratory or organization in the case of other majors.
We all know that we will have to do a project at the end of the course and most probably have to go to a company or a research institute/laboratory for the project tenure. To increase your chances you can apply for a summer project or internship during the first year of vacation.
This article both focuses on UG and PG students... Maybe, you can ignore what is not applicable to you.
Project Aims.....
The academic projects aim at the utilization of knowledge you have acquired during the course. in a more simple idea.., it is the practical application of what you studied. Society/government spends a lot of money and infrastructure on subsidies, scholarships and other sorts of expenses to educate students. So it is much important and duty of the students to give something in return. The immediate return can be the contribution to socially relevant issues, studying them and reporting them. Unfortunately, the student projects mostly get printed, evaluated and end up locked in some file cabinet or empty store. They can be published and made available to your peers. We will be discussing that in a different article.
As pointed out earlier, for undergraduate students it is the practical application of the theoretical knowledge, but for Post Graduate students the research must lead to some innovation and findings. these might help you to secure employment or further research opportunities.
Project Selection....
The projects have to be selected well in advance and have to be relevant. It is okay to select an undergraduate project which has been done before. But for postgraduate students, it is better to pursue an original idea or at least explore an area that was not touched previously in a related project. Anyway, make sure that you learn something new and present something better to your society or at least contribute to your subject. That was about how you select a topic of your own.
Assigned Project Topics....
In many cases, at least in the science domain where laboratory facilities are required, teachers will assign a topic so the equipment and labs will be utilized well and with planning. In such a situation there is not much choice on the topic and we do what we are told. But you can read as many articles and textbooks and other resources accessible to you and find out what new things can be added to this and give it a personal touch. This can be achieved by a strong theoretical background.
Selecting a laboratory/organization....
In some courses, master's students are often asked to join some laboratories or research organizations so that they get accustomed to the new methods and cutting-edge research. In these cases, you can find your area of interest and discuss with your teachers or internal guides whether they can find a spot for you in the corresponding company or research organization.
Study plans - SOP
In most cases, the project guide or the project admissions committee or the HR department of the corresponding organization may ask for a study plan and recommendation letters from your teachers.
The instructions for how to write study plans and recommendation letters will be available here (Updating...)
For these processes to be completed in a timely fashion you need to start the process at least 6 months prior. Most organizations can accept project students up to 2 months and higher up to a year.
Financial Assistance
The most important part of the project is the money you have to spend on it. Many government agencies provide fellowships and other financial assistance. Most companies take interns and get their work done by paying a fraction of the original salary. There are many cases in which your teachers can avail themselves of some funding and pay for your project requirements like analysis, data, printing, etc.
Future career
Many organizations have a practice of absorbing their interns or project students as employees or full-time research students. You may be wondering why.. It is because they have acquired the required basic training and skills during the project tenure and the company no longer has to train them. In this way, they can save at least 6 months' time, other costs, salary and efforts!!
